Tom McRae

A picture of Tom

I don't really know that much about Tom McRae. I saw him supporting Matchbox Twenty and loved his songs so I bought his self-titled album a few days later.

His music is focussed around his acoustic guitar and vocals, but also has cello, percussion and a few keyboards in it as well.

Oh yeah, and apparently both his parents are priests and he grew up in a tiny village.

Tom was nominated for the 2001 Mercury Music Award. So was Ed Harcourt. Neither of them won.

Tom's secong album, released in mid 2003 was called Just Like Blood.

Review: Hammersmith Apollo 12/06/2001

This is from my Matchbox Twenty review:

OK. Arrived at the Hammersmith Apollo at around about 8:00 and went
straight in... 4th row... nice. The support act, Tom McCain (not sure
about his surname) was brilliant. I really don't know how to describe
him. His songs were fantastically written, albeit a little depressing
and he had a great voice. He was a fairly average guitarist, but his
backing band more than made up for that. His drummer was amazing as was
his bassist/keyboardist and he also had a cellist who was pretty cool.

Anyway, he played for around 45 minutes, but managed to fit in quite a
few songs in that time. Seriously, if you get a chance to check him
 out... do so.

At the time I wrote that "review", of course I didn't know the titles of any of his songs, but I seem to remember him playing the following (in approximate order, with a lot missing!):

  • You Cut Her Hair
  • The End Of The World News (Dose Me Up)
  • The Boy With The Bubble Gun
  • Draw Down The Stars
  • Hidden Camera Show
  • A&B Song
  • San Paulo Rain
  • I Ain't Scared Of Lightning

And he probably played Streetlight as well, because that was his single at the time.
