Panorama has just run an exposé on bottled water — you can still watch it on iPlayer. As a rule, I tend not to buy bottled water, initially this was because it’s a waste of money, but in the last couple of years, having considered the environmental cost of bottled water, that is now a big justification too.

The obvious (to me) environmental problem with bottled water is that bottled water is transported hundreds, and sometimes thousands of miles, using carbon-hungry transport methods — ships and trucks mostly. By contrast, tap water is transported from a relatively local source (i.e. the reservoir)

But Panorama brought up another few environmental and moral reasons to avoid it:

Totally agree with that, and it’s what I’ve been doing for a long time already too. Too bad you can’t refill other drinks the same way ;-)

I don’t know what it’s like in the UK, but here in the Netherlands, 1 liter bottles and larger can be recycled at any supermarket, and there’s 25 Eurocent to be earned per bottle by doing so.

While this is a very good incentive to actually recycle the bottles, for some reason they don’t do this with the half-liter ones. We can’t even give them back to the supermarket for free, and to my knowledge there are no places to recycle them elsewhere.

Any tube station sells these half-liter bottles from a machine (just like in the UK you have a chocolate bar vending machine on each platform), so my guess is that most of the unrecycled plastic bottles are half-liter ones - bought on the go, thrown in a bin on the go.

I think it would be a major improvement if they would have collection points for these bottles, even if people don’t get money back for it.

I watched the documentary and it does make you think twice about buying bottled water again.
21 British Pounds for a bottle of water sounds very silly too.
There’s an alternative to bottled water by putting a carbon filter on your faucet. Simple and cheap.
